Mitochondria are of particular interest to homeopaths who have sought the biological mechanism that can explain the depth and globality of homeopathic intervention, and the multiple actions of the homeopathic remedy on the organism as a whole. Homeopathy works on the entire organism, similar to a personalized tonic, toning the organism to optimal performance. We knew from over 200 years of experience with both animals and people of all ages, including babies, that homeopathy works, but how?
Homeopathy is a non-material medicine; it is not a chemical substance. A homeopathic remedy has a very subtle field effect on a living organism. It is therefore exciting to discover that mitochondria are sensitive to this very type of subtle field effect. Science has also recently discovered that mitochondria form a dynamic, interconnected, intimately integrated network that informs and coordinates all major functions of the body, thus making it a central hub for all body functions, which would explain the “whole organism effect” that homeopathy has.
In my last blog post, I showed a diagram of the Krebs cycle illustrating how Mitochondria use “Electron Transport” and “Ion Movement” to create energy out of our food. Electrons are not particles, they are energy fields. This was the first hint that mitochondria are “quantum” organelles. These electromagnetic quantum processes are much more subtle than the kind of gross chemical reactions currently at the basis of modern medicine. In fact, quantum processes are the basis of all important life processes: nerve transmission and synapse function, smell, cell division, bird migration and photosynthesis, as discussed in the first webinar “Quantum Biology: A Fascinating Dimension of Life.”
The inner cristae of the mitochondria, where the quantum processes occur indicate sensitivity to very subtle fields. This was accidentally discovered by surgeons, who found that the muscle tissue in the vicinity of pacemakers was healthier and stronger than the surrounding muscle tissue. When examining the cells, they found that the mitochondria had been positively affected by the very subtle magnetic field of the pacemaker battery. This led to the patent of a new pacemaker emitting subtle fields so that heart tissue can be strengthened. (See Bioenergetics, Mitochondria, and Cardiac Myocyte Differentiation).
Mitochondrial dysfunction has emerged as the key factor in a myriad of diseases, including neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders such as multiple sclerosis, diabetes, alzheimer’s, cardiovascular disease, and very recently, the Gulf War Syndrome.
Doctors have struggled for decades to find a cause for a host of debilitating health problems experienced by veterans of the 1990-91 Persian Gulf War. As many as a third of servicemen and women deployed overseas during the conflict have complained of symptoms such as chronic headaches and crippling fatigue. In March of this year, scientists announced that it was the COMBINED effects of psychological stress, nerve agents, pesticides, and multiple vaccines which brought the mitochondria to their upper limit of adaptation. When that happens, the mitochondria turn genes on and off inside the nucleus of cells (epigenetics) which begins the expression of chronic disease.
It is mitochondria that register when the organism has reached its upper limit of adaptation. It is now thought that the homeopathic remedy, by signaling new information as to what is holding the organism back from adapting, and creating stress for the organism, provides the mitochondria with new options for adaptation.
