I’m back in Valle de Angeles, a lovely village in the mountains around Tegucigalpa. Here is our main clinic. We are not seeing many patients this week, but are mainly catching up on paper work. Close to 100 patients need to be entered into the database, reports need to be written and meetings need to be organized with the university UNAH and with AMHON, our main partners in Honduras. It is “semana santa” the biggest holiday of the year and kids have the week off from school, the government is off as well and banks and businesses closed as of Wednesday afternoon. For the time here, I have set up an “office” on the porch of my hotel room, combining work with pleasure. I’m also very happy to be back at eating at Gabriela’s, the best vegetarian cook in Honduras! Animals room freely in this country, even in the village itself, one can come across grazing horses. I had a lovely encounter in the village with three 12 year olds from Cantarranas, selling sweets in the more touristy village of Valle. These teens have the same preoccupations as their peers in Canada: their looks, boys, school. However, they need to spend their weekends selling sweets to provide some extra income for their mothers. Yolani and Natalia come from relatively small families with three kids. Fabiana is from a family of 8. They were delightful in their curiosity about Canada, but their most important questions for me were whether I was married and if I had kids and whether my daughter was married and had kids… Breaks your heart to know how few opportunities they have to aspire anything more than marriage and kids.
Our next missions are planned for:
September 16 – October 4 (2017)
October 18 – November 4 (2017)
