A New Model for Understanding Homeopathy

At last week’s Canadian Homeopathic Conference held in Toronto, Judyann McNamara and Iris Bell unveiled some of the latest research that could explain the depth and globality of homeopathic intervention. Researchers are uncovering the details of systemic biological mechanisms capable of responding to the signalling provided by homeopathic remedies.

Dr. Iris Bell, PhD (Harvard, magna cum laude in Biology), MD (Stanford), and licenced homeopath, is a clinical researcher who is well known for her studies involving neural sensitization as a mechanism for amplified reactivity to environmental factors in civilians with multiple chemical sensitivity and fibromyalgia and in Gulf War veterans (Gulf War Syndrome).

Dr. Bell has also been investigating the action of homeopathic medicines, submitting a novel model that could explain the mechanisms involved in the creation of homeopathic remedies. In her presentation, Bell detailed the recent research indicating that homeopathic remedies (a) contain measurable source and nanoparticles heterogeneously dispersed in a colloidal solution; (b) they act by modulating biological function of the allostatic stress response network; (c) evoke biphasic actions on living systems via organism-dependent adaptive and endogenously amplified effects; (d) improve systemic resilience. Judyann McNamara elaborated on the action of homeopathic remedies via the allostatic stress response network, which indicates the possible involvement of the mitochondria. In recent blog articles, Judyann has discussed recent leading edge research revealing the central role in the allostatic stress response network held by mitochondria, citing a recently published an article introducing the concept of  Mitochondrial Allostatic Load (MAL) and how the combined effects of stressors create chronic disease in a healthy individual.

This paper shows the relationship of qualitative regulation of nuclear gene expression to quantitative changes in mtDNA mutant levels, challenges the traditional “single mutation–single disease” concept and provides an alternative perspective on the molecular basis of complex metabolic and degenerative diseases, cancer, and aging.  Click here to read all his publications.
