Since its inception, our profession, its practitioners, and its organizations have constantly evolved—persistently meeting and overcoming institutional resistance to secure our rightful place in the modern healthcare landscape.

In the spirit of this evolution, and to add to this momentum, we are thrilled to share a major milestone: The MICH Academy for Holism and Classical Homeopathy (MICH) has been officially approved by the College of Homeopaths of Ontario (CHO)!

This landmark approval means our curriculum meets rigorous, government-backed regulatory standards. However, it also highlighted a critical question we hear from practitioners and clients alike: What is the difference between a professional order, a certification board, and a voluntary association? Because there is no single global body that regulates homeopathy, different organizations step in to serve different needs based on regional legislation and professional goals. To help you navigate this sometimes confusing landscape, here is a short guide to the professional ecosystem of Homeopaths in North America.

1. The Regulatory Body (The Professional Order)

College of Homeopaths of Ontario (CHO)

The Mandate: Public Protection & Legal Regulation

A regulatory body or professional order is mandated by government legislation. Its primary job is not to advocate for the homeopath, but to protect the public by ensuring safety, competence, and ethical practice.

Think of it exactly like the College of Nurses or the College of Physicians and Surgeons that exist everywhere else. Just as a medical doctor or a registered nurse cannot legally open a practice, see patients, or use those professional titles without being registered with their respective government College, the same rules apply here.

The CHO is currently the only government-mandated licensing body for homeopaths in North America. In the province of Ontario, registration is not optional; it is a strict legal requirement if you want to practice homeopathy or use the title “Homeopath.” The CHO sets entry-to-practice requirements, maintains a public register, and handles formal complaints.

The Big Picture: Because our program is approved, our graduates are eligible to apply to the CHO. Excitingly, the CHO is actively working with government officials and insurance companies across Canadian provinces to expand government recognition and insurance coverage for its members nationwide.

2. Professional Associations & Unions 

Professional associations and unions are your advocates. While orders protect the public and certifying boards validate skill, professional associations and unions are there to fight for the practitioner. They handle advocacy, political action, business tools, and community building.

North American Society of Homeopaths (NASH)

Serving the US, Canada, and Mexico, NASH is a voluntary professional advocacy association dedicated to representing the voice of professional homeopaths. They maintain a registry of “Registered Members” (RSHom(NA) to promote the profession and protect the right to practice.

Key Benefits: Access to a massive legal defense fund, specialized liability insurance, directory listings, and political advocacy.

Canadian Society of Homeopaths (CSH)

This national voluntary association provides professional legitimacy and public awareness within Canada, particularly in provinces where homeopathy is not yet government-regulated.

Syndicat Professionnel des Homéopathes du Québec (SPHQ)

Because Quebec does not currently have a government-mandated professional order for homeopaths, the SPHQ serves as a professional union and the primary organizing body for practitioners within the province. Their mission is to defend the professional interests of members and promote the practice.

Key Benefits: Members can issue homeopathic insurance receipts that are currently recognized by roughly ten major insurance companies—making membership strongly recommended for anyone practicing in Quebec.

3. The Certifying Body 

Council for Homeopathic Certification (CHC)

The Mandate: Validating Excellence & Peer Recognition

A certifying body is an independent, voluntary organization that sets an elite benchmark for education and clinical competence.

The CHC offers the highly respected CCH (Certified Classical Homeopath) credential across the USA and Canada. It is crucial to understand that the CHC is not a regulatory body. It does not grant the legal right to practice, nor does it provide legal defense or liability insurance. Instead, it acts as a voluntary “board certification.”

Holding a CHC certification is how you prove your high level of skill to your peers and the public, establishing a trusted standard of excellence in regions where homeopathy is not yet legally regulated by local governments.
