Why We Teach Complexes at MICH

Discover the powerful complexes that prompted a Unicist College to teach Complexes
Scroll down to listen to this free audio presentation by Carla Marcelis, director and teacher at MICH to learn about the power behind the complexes developed during missions in Africa and Latin America by HTSF-Canada (homeopaths thérapeutes sans frontières – homeopaths therapists without borders)-Canada. These complexes have proven to be effective in epidemics, acute diseases as well as management of chronic diseases such as kidney insufficiency, diabetes and diseases of memory.
The HTSF complexes were designed by a Canadian homeopath, Martine Jourde for a Canadian NGO, HTSF-Canada. MICH has been a partner with HTSF-Canada since 2013 when our students and graduates started to go on missions with HTSF. Given that we’re the largest homeopathic training institute in Quebec, Canada, with the most students, HTSF was interested in collaborating with MICH in order to be able to do missions to two main projects: in Honduras and in Cuba. The year 2013 was also the introduction for me to the HTSF projects in these countries and I led many missions to Honduras between 2013 and 2019. In Honduras I saw the success of the HTSF approach in diseases such as Chagas, Dengue and Chikungunya, but also in respiratory infections, and chronic issues like high blood pressure and diabetes.
Since then, we have been teaching the HTSF complexes to our student population.
HTSF complexes as a Synergistic whole
The methodology used by HTSF-Canada and Martine Jourde, the founder and genius behind the complexes, to develop the complexes is based on the teachings of Dr Burnett, who suggested to: “Use a ladder (a series) of remedies, not one of which of itself can effect a cure, but each of which works cure-wards, their cumulative action eventuating a cure. It is not possible to restore health with just one remedy in some cases, and covering the totality is a useless and fruitless task.” He also taught us that a homeopath needs to anticipate the need of one remedy after another corresponding to the physiological disease process “no matter whether the symptoms reveal the process or not.”
Martine Jourde and the members of HTSF-Canada have many years of practice in Africa and Latin America and parts of the world which has also contributed to the formulations and adaptations of complexes.
The first thing to note about the HTSF complexes is that they match the process of development of disease as it was discovered in the proving (the pathogenesis – Allen is a great source of documenting proving symptoms as they appear hour by hour) of each of the remedies and clinically observed in patients. Each step in that process is anticipated and matched with a remedy. We can say that each HTSF complex acts as a simillimum to the disease process it is meant to address. Be they an inflammatory process, viral or bacterial infectious process, development of chronic diseases, such as metabolic diseases, etc.
By bringing the remedies together that affect steps of such a disease process, we create a new synergistic whole. Their action does not simply come from the addition of remedies (1+1 =2). And it is our experience that the complexes work more efficiently than the remedies individually. They are an example of the holistic concept that “the whole is more than simply a sum of its parts”. A quantum phenomenon.
In order to formulate a complex, three levels need to be addressed by the remedies:
- The disease itself: What do we know about its progression, pathophysiology?
- The patient: patient susceptibility, terrain: Hereditary factors, epigenetics (miasm), suppression, lack of detoxification, demineralization and dehydration. Lack of support to the immune system.
- The environment: The need to adapt to different environmental circumstances, change of seasons.
So each complex, including the ones for acute diseases addresses more than the symptoms of the disease strictly speaking, it might address adaptation of the immune system, underlying miasms, they can include nosodes, bowel nosodes and sarcodes for adaptation and a deeper and more complete healing.
The HTSF First Line Complexes
A core group of 15 complexes is referred to as the “First Line” and they are the ones that are taught to families, community leaders as well as health professionals. These complexes were designed to relieve the various phases and causes of acute disease processes and traumas, such as injuries, infections, fevers, coughs, diarrhea, etc.
In all, the development of HTSF complexes continues and is always in response to demands by the partners in Cuba, Honduras and Canada. Over the years, especially through collaboration with Cuban hospitals and universities, new complexes have been developed and there are now some 100 available that are part of research protocols and respond to multiple health problems.
Conclusion
The HTSF complexes are “Intelligent” in that their development is Evidence-based and their action is Synergistic:
- They address several physio-pathological phases in the disease process
- They cover several types of sensations of the same phenomenon
- They address epigenetic and constitutional needs
- They provide adaptation to environmental changes
You’ll understand that a complex has a much larger target and it is less likely that the correct object of treatment is missed as compared to using a single remedy.Another advantage of this system of complexes is that it is easier to teach, understand, and apply: they don’t require the 4 years of studies it takes to train a homeopath. (HTSF) has introduced the complexes to health promoters, community leaders and parents since 2003. Thanks to these complexes, the training of their use and long-distance support, the health promoters trained in this fashion have been able to uphold a first line of care in their families and localities, where access to medical care is scarce. The complexes can be locally multiplied and therefore provide autonomy to the community. HTSF has continued with these trainings and has now trained close to 1000 people in Honduras alone, many more in Cuba, Haiti and Canada.

What our Students Tell Us
With each exercise and mentorship session, I continue to gain new insight regarding how I move through life. Collectively, these experiences have offered glimpses into what
true acceptance feels like (pretty amazing). I am truly grateful to the entire MICH community for helping me to see that I was actually resisting sacredness through expectation. I am very much looking forward to continuing the journey with you all!
