Life requires opposites. All living processes such as digestion, the action of enzymes, metabolism, the flow of nerve impulses and the ability of our muscles to create movement are based on the exchange of positively and negatively charged ions. This constant interchange of polar opposites establishes the movement of life. It is the physical expression of the yin and yang of the Dao: this is the “way” of Life. Existence is an interplay of dark and light, masculine and feminine, mystery and matter. All of physical manifestation emerges from this dance.
We experience this polarized dance of opposites on every level: energetically in our meridians and chakras, biochemically in every cell, tissue, muscle and organ.
This dance of opposites involves the push and pull of repulsion and attraction. A state of tension that is, by definition, potential; the potential of new creation, of movement and of evolution.
We experience this state of tension on every level.
Our experience of emotion, if we really just stay with the pure experience, can be felt as a peak of tension between opposing forces. Each emotion corresponds to a particular dance of repulsion and attraction.
- Fear is the tension between the holomovement of the surrounding macrocosm and the life force of the individual organism as microcosm (considering the life force as the movement creating the wholeness of the organism as microcosm). Fear involves both Repulsion (in the form of fleeing from what seems dangerous to the organism) and Attraction (in the form of holding on to what seems necessary for survival). In extreme Fear, the proportion of Attraction and Repulsion (fleeing and holding on) are exactly equal, resulting in freezing.
- Sadness or disappointment (which are the flip side of Desire or wanting) are the result of the tension between the force keeping two distinct wholes (self and other) unique or separate, and the force of unifying them into a bigger whole. The force of Attraction is so strong that it completely dominates the experience. In extreme Desire or sadness (depression) the annihilation of the microcosm through unification with the “other” is experienced as the resolution.
- Anger is the tension created within the microcosm to maintain its integrity in the face of another microcosm. Repulsion dominates this experience. In the extreme experience of Anger, Repulsion can lead to the destruction of the “other” in order to maintain the “self”.
The full spectrum of “colors” of emotional experience can be considered as different compositions of these three primary emotions: Fear, Sadness (Desire) and Anger.
Repulsion and Attraction are the two primary forces referred to as Love (Compassion) and Wisdom in Buddhist philosophy and the Kabbalah (Hokmah and Binah). In Taoist thought, Wisdom is the manifest world, or Yang, and Love the unmanifest mystery, or Yin. In the Hindu interpretation, they are Shiva and Shakti. In the Tarot, and ancient Egyptian lore, they correspond to the archetypes of the Magician and the High Priestess.
Our immune system is directed by this polarity in its role of determining what to kill or to keep. Our digestive system is so directed so as to be able to integrate food (non-self) with self, and to eliminate what is harmful or not useful.
Duality of the Mind
We are all familiar with the same process of Attraction and Repulsion reflected in our thought process. Thought divides the world into opposites: success and failure, right and wrong, good and bad, us and them, love and hate, fear and safety, victim and perpetrator, pain and pleasure.
We live on the razor’s edge of self/not self.
Neutrality is death, conflict can end in violence and destruction, or insight and expansion.
This is the dance of duality, the dance of life.
Seeing our way through duality
The middle road described by the Buddha is not neutrality; it is developing the ability to engage with, move with, and through, the duality of forces.
Homeopathy is a medicine that supports life and all its processes and therefore directly relates to this dance of duality.
The proper application of homeopathy requires a seeing “through”, a perceiving of the dance as a whole dynamic process and principle. It involves discovering the dynamic tension on all levels: mental, emotional and physical. Correspondences between levels are revealed through a multi-dimensional exploration. It is these correspondences that form the basis of understanding the disease (diagnosis), the opportunity it presents and the support the organism requires (prescription).
Join us on November 28th to explore the many dimensions and levels of your own inner dynamic tension: the dance of duality that simultaneously sustains your organism and creates disease.
Come dance on your own razor’s edge.
Judyann McNamara – ND, DHom, CCH
Originally a physicist and biomedical researcher, Judyann has had a clinical practice for over 15 years, has held conferences since 1984 and has been a teacher of courses in physics, health sciences, homeopathy, holism and spirituality since 1975. On Saturday, November 28th, Judyann McNamara (physicist, homeopath, MICH founder, teacher) provides a fascinating and inspiring morning lecture on the most recent scientific discoveries about the origins of life and why science has difficulty understanding what life is. We will be exploring exciting new developments in research that seriously challenge our worldview. In the afternoon, experiential exercises will be facilitated by Judyann and the MICH team to further your understanding of the relationship between the force that drives evolution called Holism, and health and well-being.
