What do we mean by Body-Mind-Soul? Our language belies an uncomfortable truth: we see ourselves and our world in parts, and think in parts, even though we know that we are looking at a whole, a greater synthesis, a greater and deeper reality than any of the three “parts”.
Holism was originally introduced by Jan Christian Smuts in 1926, in a book called “Holism and Evolution”: a beautiful integration of Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution and Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity. Smuts recognized that there was a force behind evolution and the tendency to create wholes, which he called “Holism”. Holism is not a concept or a philosophy, it is a meta-philosophy that explains not only the origins of life, but the purpose of life. Holism itself is an evolved form of mechanism, and provides a much more suitable vehicle for homeopathy than the current mechanistic assumptions of science. Smuts, like Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy, recognized the limitations of a materialistic, mechanistic view of living organisms. Like Hahnemann, he recognized an immaterial “cause” underlying the physical manifestations. Hahnemann’s genius lies in his understanding of the holistic nature of the organism. Hahnemann insists that the “only thing in every case of disease, [in order to cure] is the totality of symptoms”: the symptom complex as a collective whole which forms one single “outwardly reflected image of the inner wesen” This requirement to perceive the disease state as a whole rather than in parts (as we usually do) is a process that can be facilitated by an in-depth understanding of Holism.
Holism answers the questions that science alone or philosophy alone cannot. Questions such as: What is life? What is the soul? What drives evolution? What is the ultimate expression of the human being? What does the human being represent in creation?
Working holistically involves the ability to discern the underlying movements beyond the physical, tangible, sensible aspects of ourselves, each other and nature, Holism is a requirement for finding true cures, and the solutions for our current ecological problems.

It is also a requirement for all MICH programs.

• how to go from duality and conflict in any situation to a holistic understanding;
• how to go from a piece-meal understanding (body-mind-soul) to a holistic one;
• deeper understanding of the life force or vital force;
• the criteria of a Holistic cure;
• a clear understanding of soul.
Discover the true roots of Holism
Jan Christian Smuts coined the word in 1926 when he wrote “Holism and Evolution” after he left his post as Prime Minister of South Africa, having opposed the growing forces of apartheid in the 1920s, the only Prime Minister to do so until Nelson Mandela.
Smuts proposed that being holistic (from the Greek holos, or whole), would imply being conscious of our participation and relationship to a greater whole. Wholeness, the central quality of Holism, implies a reality, system or truth in which all parts or aspects are present in right and healthy relationship with each other. This right relationship — or synergy — is what makes the whole being “greater than the sum of its parts.”
True Holism goes to the core through insight and proceeds to see the parts in reference to the greater whole. When the essence is grasped through insight, all other aspects simply unfold from that understanding. The physical, mental, emotional and spiritual issues are but different reflections of the same source. They are facets of the same diamond. They are the fine details of a much deeper underlying dimension.
A Holistic approach addresses underlying causes
Thus, working holistically involves the ability to discern the underlying formative field beyond the physical, tangible, sensible aspects of ourselves, each other and nature, that form the implicate order described by the famous quantum physicist, David Bohm.
Holism is much more than a concept, much more than just another way of working: it is a meta-philosophy that contains all others, and thus a meta-practice that contains all practices. And, making one’s practice holistic involves integrating Holism into your daily life.
The practice of Holism brings witness to the exquisitely inter-accommodating coherency of the universe and her awe-inspiring beauty. This unfolding of life’s mysteries is itself enough to justify making one’s practice and perspective holistic. But there are other reasons: there is the greater efficiency, faster and more lasting solutions provided by Holism, as well as the satisfaction and personal fulfillment that come with such solutions. There is also the gift of a continually deepening relationship with ourselves, the universe and each other as the interconnections of the web of life become more visible and pervasive.
